About the Project
This DIY project consisted of creating a custom container to store used coffee capsules before taking them to recycling. The goal was to have an organized and aesthetically pleasing solution next to the coffee machine.
Custom Design
The project included a custom mold to mark the letters “Coffee Capsule Recycling” on the box:
Materials Used
MDF Boards
- Thickness: 3mm
- Main material for walls and box structure
- Easy to work with and economical
Wood Strips
- Dimensions: 12mm x 12mm
- Used for structural reinforcement and finishes
- Provide greater strength to the assembly
Construction Process
Custom Cutting
The project included detailed customization work:
- Cutting letters in the mold: Process that took about 45 minutes
- Attention to detail to ensure professional finish
- Precision woodworking
Assembly
Combination of different elements:
- MDF boards for main structure
- Strips for reinforcement
- Careful finishing at joints
Design Reflections
Aesthetic Choices
During the project, I identified an improvement opportunity:
- Interior painted white: Initial choice
- Reflection: Painting the interior black would have better complemented a coffee machine’s aesthetic
- This reflection demonstrates the importance of considering the usage context in design
Despite this note, the final product was considered successful and functional.
Functionality
The box serves as:
- Temporary storage for used capsules
- Organized solution next to the coffee machine
- Recycling incentive by making the process more convenient
- Functional decorative element in the kitchen
