Preparation

Tuna pie is a beloved Portuguese comfort food that brings together flaky pastry with a creamy, savory filling. Perfect for family gatherings or meal prep.

Cooking Instructions

1. Cook the potatoes

Peel and dice the potatoes. Boil in salted water until tender (about 10-12 minutes). Drain and set aside.

2. Prepare the filling

In a large pan, heat the olive oil and sauté the onion until translucent. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute.

3. Add tuna and vegetables

Add the drained tuna (flaked with a fork), peas, and tomato paste. Cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally.

4. Combine ingredients

Add the cooked potatoes and chopped eggs. Pour in the cream, season with salt and pepper, and mix well. Cook for 2 minutes until heated through. Remove from heat and stir in fresh parsley. Let cool slightly.

5. Assemble the pie

Line a pie dish with one sheet of puff pastry. Add the tuna filling, spreading evenly.

6. Cover and seal

Cover with the second sheet of pastry, seal the edges by pressing with a fork, and make a few small cuts on top for steam to escape.

7. Brush and bake

Brush the top with beaten egg yolk. Bake in a preheated oven at 200°C for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.

Tips

  • Let the filling cool before assembling to prevent soggy pastry
  • You can add chopped olives or bell peppers for extra flavor
  • Serves well both hot and cold
  • Great for picnics and lunchboxes
